Superradiant instabilities for unstable scalar fields

I discuss the development of superradiant instabilities for massive scalar fields in the Kerr background for the case where the field has a non-vanishing decay width. I show, in particular, that as expected the field's own instability screens the growth of the superradiant instability. I then discuss the implications of this result for using black holes as probes of exotic particle physics.
