 Luís Filipe Meira Machado

Full Professor, Department of Mathematics

University of Minho, Portugal

Biography

Luís Meira Machado is Full Professor at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Minho, Portugal.

His research interests encompass various aspects of survival analysis, with a particular focus on multi-state models, nonparametric estimation, ROC curves, generalized additive models, and computational statistics. Recently, he has directed his attention towards applying these methodologies to the field of machine learning.

Luís's primary scientific contributions revolve around multi-state models, where he has significantly advanced the topic of the estimation of transition probabilities. Additionally, he has made noteworthy contributions to computational statistics, including the development of R packages. His expertise also extends to smoothing methods, particularly with regard to presmoothing and additive models.

With an extensive academic portfolio, Luís has authored or co-authored more than 54 journal articles and book chapters, showcasing the depth and breadth of his contributions. His commitment to advancing statistical methodologies is further evident through the creation of 12 packages in the CRAN R repository. Furthermore, he has presented over 100 conference communications.

As a mentor, Luís has supervised 2 doctoral theses and guided the research of 3 post-doctoral researchers. Additionally, he is currently supervising two ongoing doctoral theses. His leadership extends beyond academic mentorship, as he coordinated one research project and serves as the co-Principal Investigator in two others, all funded by the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT).

Luís has played an active role in the scientific community, serving on the scientific committees of various conferences and organizing invited sessions. His dedication to the advancement of statistical science is further reflected in his role as a frequent reviewer for leading journals in his field.

In addition to his academic responsibilities, Luís assumed the role of Head of the Department of Mathematics between 2022 and 2024, and currently serves as President of the Portuguese Statistical Society. These leadership roles underscore Luís's commitment to both the academic and organizational facets of the mathematical and statistical community.

·     An R package called markovMSM, for checking the Markov condition in multi-state survival data.

·     An R package called survidm, for analyzing data from an illness-death multi-state model.

·     An R package called survivalREC, Nomparametric estimation of the distribution of gap times for recurrent events.

·     An R package called flexOR, that provide flexible odds ratio curves that enable modeling non-linear relationships between continuous predictors and binary outcomes. These curves allow for comparison against a specified reference value, aiding in the interpretation of the predictor's effect.
