Black holes in string theory and holography

Presenting author: Sameer Murthy

The discovery of Bekenstein and Hawking that black holes are thermodynamic objects is an important clue towards the quantum theory of gravity. I will discuss how these ideas have been taken forward using string theory to develop a detailed quantum picture of black holes. In particular I will show how the idea of holography and the AdS/CFT correspondence teach us about certain quantum statistical properties of black holes in string theory. As an illustration I will present some recent progress in understanding the phase structure of supersymmetric black holes in asymptotically AdS5 space.
